Aim of the Instructor Programme

The Adventure Brand are now accepting applications for over 18’s on our unique semi-intensive instructor programme in the Portsmouth and Chichester area for 2016. An interview will be arranged, once application forms have been submitted. The course is aimed at a variety of people, whether you’re in or leaving education, wanting a career change or like many recognise the need to gain National Governing Body qualifications to advance your career prospects. The Adventure Brand recognise the difficulties in balancing other commitments and getting the appropriate time and experience to achieve the right qualifications and that’s why we are providing a unique approach to our semi-intensive instructor programme running from October 2016 to April 2017.

The course is designed to be multi-disciplined and will develop your personal ability and instructor qualifications in a multitude of sports from Climbing, Mountain Biking, Paddlesport, Archery and Bush Craft. Although it is not possible to guarantee success with assessments, the aim is to deliver and train you for your Climbing Wall Award, Single Pitch Award Training, Mountain Bike Instructor Award Level 1, BCU UKCC level 1, Archery Instructors, RYA Power Boat Level 2 and First Aid.  You will receive tuition spread out over a period of 25 weeks, with input during school term holidays, a variety of weekends and some evenings. We recognise the need to consolidate learning and will provide individual targets and hope along with other candidates on the programme you will have a common interest in gaining valuable experience between contact time.

Course Content:

The programme is open to six candidates and will start October half term 2016 with delivery over Christmas Break, February Half Term, Easter Holiday and separate weekends. The course will mainly be delivered in the Portsmouth and Chichester area with some weekends in other parts of the UK. The individuality of running a semi-intensive programme also allows the candidate to gain additional experience in between instruction from the course and is strongly encouraged to maximise the benefit towards their success. It is also required that applicants will already have some experience in at least one of the outdoor pursuits and although this does not guarantee success, it strongly increases your chances and therefore applicants will be considered on their individual merit.

The programme aims to not only provide you with the skills required to pass the assessments, but also improve your personal ability beyond what you would be teaching. This again will be on individual merit with specific targets set for you as an individual. Below is brief outline of the personal skills you will develop in addition to the instructor qualifications in each sport:

Climbing is a large section of the course with fast progression through the use of a variety of climbing walls and with a focus on top roping, lead climbing and movement techniques. These skills will then be transferred into the outdoor setting with progression into learning how to set up top ropes and lead climb on bolted and traditional routes.

Mountain Biking is a smaller section within the programme, but with a focus on personal skills on both easy and technical terrain. Your personal riding and navigation skills will be challenged on the South Downs and with more advanced riding on purpose built trails.

Paddlesport involves a good standard in both canoe and kayak and therefore an essential part of the course. You will develop your skills in a variety of craft and environments, using flat water and tidal venues. More advanced skills will also be developed on either moving water or surf, depending on conditions.

Archery involves developing your own skills in club shoots and completing your Archery GB’s instructor qualification.

RYA Power Boat level 2 will take place in the Portsmouth area over a couple of days on the course. Those having already completed their level 2 and with power boat experience can move onto the RYA Safety Boat course.
